Benjamin Franklin once said that it’s easier to prevent bad habits than break them. At The Carrollton Dentist, we couldn’t agree more; good dental habits are the bedrock of family dentistry.
Teaching children good oral hygiene techniques early will benefit their smile for a lifetime.
If you wait too long to teach your child how to brush and floss, or if you don’t make sure they are doing it enough, you’re setting yourself up for a lot of work down the road.
It can be difficult to convince an older child to spend two or three minutes brushing their teeth each morning and night. But if they’ve done it for as long as they can remember, then their habits should be sufficient to avoid excessive tooth decay.
To get your child started on the road to a lifetime of good dental health, try one or more of the following:
- Get a fun toothbrush. The grocery store is filled with brushes featuring popular movie and TV characters, and kids love them. At this age, the brush doesn’t have to be fancy. Bring your kid to the store with you, so he or she can choose.
- Establish rewards. This doesn’t have to be out-and-out bribery. We mean little prizes, like staying up an extra half hour beyond bedtime for doing a great job brushing.
- Make brushing a game. You might sing a silly song as your child brushes, or brush with them and say, “Can you do a better job brushing than I can?” This has the added benefit of setting the right example, and showing them how much clean teeth mean to you.
Above all, let your child know how important it is to see the dentist twice a year. A clean mouth is a happy mouth! The Carrollton Dentist provides family dentistry to your entire brood. We also provide popular cosmetic dentistry procedures like teeth whitening and porcelain veneers. Schedule an appointment with us today.
